Q: Who does the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel ("VPGC") represent?

A: The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel provides legal advice and representation to the University of Michigan. In that capacity, VPGC attorneys advise the Board of Regents, Executive Officers, Faculty, Staff, and sometimes Students, all in their official capacities, on various legal issues impacting the University.

Q: What type of legal services does VPGC provide?

A: The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel is responsible for providing a full range of legal services to the University. VPGC attorneys work in a variety of practice areas and locations on campus. Some areas in which VPGC attorneys can provide legal advice are: labor and employment, business matters, contract review, litigation, environmental, copyright, property acquisitions, student and faculty issues, tax, constitutional law, among others. VPGC also has attorneys that practice exclusively at the University of Michigan Medical System, Development Office and Technology Management Office.

Q: Can I obtain personal legal advice and services from VPGC?

A: No. VPGC provides legal services related to University business only. You can consult with a VPGC attorney regarding University legal matters related to your employment at the University; however, you are responsible for hiring your own attorney to handle personal legal matters. If you need help finding an attorney, the Washtenaw County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service may be able to help you. They can be reached at (734) 996-3229.

Q: I am a student. Can I obtain legal advice and services from VPGC?

A: Not unless the legal matter is related to your employment at the University or a University sponsored event or activity. You can contact Student Legal Services at 763-9920 to obtain personal legal advice and services.

Q: Does the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel provide legal services to the Flint and Dearborn campuses?

A: Yes.
